Conventional wisdom says if you want to make art, you have to start your own 501(c)(3). The problem is, once an artist starts his own non-profit, there's very little time for making art. The day-to-day business of administering a tax-exempt corporation leaves scant room for anything else.
Here's an idea. Why not let artists spend time on their art? Fiscal sponsorship allows artists and unincorporated groups to solicit tax-deductible donations and apply for grants, without going through the onerous process of launching a 501(c)(3).
But there's more. On our website, fiscally sponsored artists can view their donor history, electronically transfer funds, report donations, craft budgets, and use our templates to draft major donor letters.
That's why fiscal sponsorship with Fractured Atlas is the right choice for so many artists and arts groups nationwide. In FY2009, we approved over 260 new projects, bringing our total to over 1,400 active projects. (That's more than any other organization in the country, including both arts and non-arts sponsors!)
Many of our projects — and some of the most exciting arts groups around — leave our little nonprofit nest and go on to form their own nonprofits. Others find that staying on with Fractured Atlas suits their mission and capacity better. We're happy for both.
"Fractured Atlas has been enormously helpful with our fundraising. They give our donors numerous payment options and have really streamlined their process to make it user-friendly. I have recommended and will continue to recommend Fractured Atlas to other theatre companies!" Lee Ann Gullie, Managing Director, CollaborationTown, New York NY.
"As a start-up theatre company in NYC, the fiscal sponsorship and support Theatre Askew received from Fractured Atlas allowed us to build our company through its first few years. FA provided not only a fiscal umbrella but a wealth of insight and help to help us succeed in those crucial first years of our organization." Jason Jacobs, Co-Artistic Director, Theatre Askew, New York NY.
"As the publisher of Alimentum, I'm thrilled to have Fractured Atlas as our fiscal sponsor. It allows us to apply for grants and accept donations without having to set up our own non-profit status. And Fractured Atlas is a GREAT group of people!" Paulette Licitra, Publisher, "Alimentum – the Literature of Food", Nashville TN.
"We use our membership mostly to take advantage of the fiscal sponsorship program, and other helpful support you offer. I know that some of our freelancers have also gotten health insurance through you. Plus the Fractured Atlas staff is smart and attentive, and just nice!" Nan Richardson, Founder, Umbrage Editions, New York NY.
Rubber Rep and Nature Theatre of Oklahoma, both Fractured Atlas fiscal sponsees, have both been awarded the prestigious MAP Fund Grant, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, and administered by Creative Capital.
