Christopher Elam
"A true original, Mr. Elam is one of the most individualistic of modern dance voices today." - The New York Times.
Since founding his six-person modern dance company, Misnomer Dance Theater, Elam's work has been performed in over 100 theaters across the USA, Cuba, Brazil, Indonesia, Ireland and Turkey. Elam's work is an eclectic mix of internationally influenced movement, modern dance, and theater manifested through creature-like partnering and the telling of human stories. He has met critical acclaim including two half-page photos in the New York Times, a three-page feature in Dance Magazine, interviews by The New Yorker and The New York Times, and reviews in numerous publications. Having graduated magna cum laude from Brown University and received his MFA in Dance from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Elam is currently a guest choreographer at Brown University, Manhattanville College, and Hofstra University. His company is presently commissioned by the Joyce Theater with a yearlong residency to create a new evening-length choreography to premiere at Performance Space 122 on May 10-14, 2006.
