…Brought to you by The Rockefeller Foundation!

Fabulous news! Fractured Atlas has been named as a recipient of a grant award from The Rockefeller Foundation’s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund.

Disbursed over two years, the $150,000 grant will support Place + Displaced, our community mapping and civic participation project. Place + Displaced is intended to identify sources of cultural vitality and support neighborhood self-determination, for those who live and work in areas where gentrification often equals displacement.

Already underway in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick, Brooklyn, Fractured Atlas has partnered with El Puente, The Pratt Center for Community Development, Williamsburg Gallery Association, The Academy for Urban Planning, Arts in Bushwick, Brooklyn Arts Council, CityLore, and the New York Industrial Retention Network (NYIRN), to map artists, cultural organizations, and creative industry resources. The project will continue in 2009 in Long Island City, Queens, and in a 3rd neighborhood to be selected.

The data gathered will ultimately be featured on an interactive online map for each neighborhood. Those who visit the map will be able to view, sort, and filter information in a variety of ways, and click on markers representing arts organizations or artists to bring up profiles, photos, and first-person audio and video narratives.

We hope that Place + Displaced will provide a blueprint for similar projects seeking to address the negative effects of gentrification in other areas of the country. Fractured Atlas is enormously grateful and honored that The Rockefeller Foundation has chosen to support it!
