Fractured U.’s First Video Workshop!

Fractured Atlas is proud to announce the launch of its first Fractured U. video workshop:  Independent Contractors vs. Employees: What’s the Difference?.

Our members are constantly asking us how to classify the artists that they hire — are they independent contractors or employees?  And what’s the difference?  And what will happen if I classify them incorrectly?  Well, Fractured Atlas is unfortunately not a law firm, so we’re not too well versed in this.  But, the folks at Dance/NYC brought us a video workshop with people who are!

“What’s a video workshop?,” you ask.  Well, like our other online courses in Fractured U., this is something you can do on your own time — it’s not live, and you don’t have to watch the video all at once.  Dance/NYC recorded this workshop that took place at their offices in September 2009.  For just $10, you get to view the entire workshop through streaming video, PLUS you get all of the handouts (and more!) that those who attended the actual workshop received.  There is even an outline/timeline of the video in case you want to skip sections and scroll through — you can’t do THAT at a live workshop!!

Overview: Do you understand what makes an employee different than an independent contractor? Did you know you can be charged back taxes if the labor board determines you have misclassified the artists you pay?  Learn the rules and get an update on Department of Labor (DOL) guidelines in this video workshop! Dance/NYC Director Michelle Burkhart (an attorney herself) reports on a visit with the DOL and provides easy steps to follow to stay in compliance. Guest speaker Richard G. Kass, an attorney at Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC, also provides his expertise on this subject.  This session will help arts organizations determine whether or not those that they employ should be identified as independent contractors or employees. Please note, even though this was a workshop held by Dance/NYC, most of the information applies to all types arts organizations across the country. There are a few specific references to New York State laws.

This video workshop is 70 minutes in length and you can pause, rewind, and fast-forward to your hearts’ content.  The cost of the workshop is only $10 — a great bargain since you’re getting the workshop and a whole lot of supporting documents!

Enroll today for the Independent Contractors vs. Employees video workshop at Fractured U, where arts professionals learn to navigate the business of art.
