Place + Displaced Event in Long Island City

Please join us this Saturday, April 24, in person or online, for a community conversation about living and working as creative professionals, arts administrators, and community organizers in Long Island City, New York.

The community conversation will take place from 2:00-4:00PM at The Irish Center on 10-40 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City.  Can’t be there in person? We’re trying a bit of an experiment (read: please be patient if it doesn’t work perfectly this first time around) and streaming the conversation live, complete with web chat, on the Fractured Atlas Ustream page.  To up the ante a bit on the inaugural run, we’ll be projecting the web chat into the space so in-person attendees can follow along with the online discussion and any questions that are posed.

This is all part of our Place + Displaced program, a community cultural mapping and civic participation project, that is engaging with several neighborhoods in different stages of gentrification. We are currently working in Long Island City, with the expectation that community engagement and surveying will continue through most of 2010.

Place + Displaced began in Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick, Brooklyn during the fall of 2006.  This mapping process employs participatory action research, whereby community groups document their constituencies and articulate their concerns. Our Long Island City partners include The Chocolate Factory, Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City Business Development Corporation and Riis Neighborhood Settlement House.

On Saturday, April 24 we want community input, your responses to our initial findings in Long Island City and what we might still be missing.

We hope you can join us!
