Happy Birthday Karen Atkinson (and a gift for everyone)!
Karen Atkinson, one of Fractured Atlas’ close colleagues and collaborators from California, is celebrating her birthday today! Karen is a professor at CalArts and is the founder of GYST (Getting Your Sh*t Together), which creates software that helps artists manage their lives and careers. If you remember from back in January, we launched one of Karen’s courses (about getting your sh*t together) on Fractured U., our FREE online course system for Fractured Atlas members. We’re so glad that many of you have already enrolled in that course!
In honor of Karen’s birthday, we are launching her second course, Presentation Venues. This is an in-depth course on artistic spaces and venues that is mainly geared towards visual artists, as well as those working in a multidisciplinary nature. However, all artists can certainly find some information to take away.
The course will take you through multiple sites, including museums, commercial galleries, non-profit and artist-run spaces, college/university sites, private dealers, rental galleries, corporate collections, registries, open studios, online galleries, vanity galleries, co-op spaces, public art spaces, art fairs, auctions, and lots of alternative sites for site-specific projects. Phew!
Karen lists the pros, cons, and research hints about these spaces, as well as how to seek them out. You are bound to learn something from this course; at the very least, it should spark an idea for a site that best fits your own practice.
And remember, not only are Fractured U. courses free, but they are completely asynchronous — meaning you can take it on your own time and may start and stop as many times as you’d like. This course should only take about 1-1.5 hours of your time.
