San Francisco-based Dreamtime Circus is a troupe of self-described “fire fairies, clowns, musicians, and all types of other magical and fantastical creatures” who not only entertain, but aim to empower and uplift youth, enrich communities, and build cross-cultural relationships through arts education and performance art.
Founded in 2002, Flying Art provides opportunities for youth from around the world to share their culture through the exchange of their own artwork. Similar to the idea of pen-pals, Flying Art matches three schools from different countries per exchange to create and share artwork with one another, thereby inspiring an open exchange of ideas and cultural backgrounds.
Our first Member Profile of 2009 spotlights a band that is, at once, active in the here-and-now, having just stepped out of the recording studio, and, according to their website, “envisions an alternative musical history, one in which the dance orchestras that ruled the Swing Era never went extinct, but continued to evolve with the times.” Darcy James Argue, leader of Secret Society and Fractured Atlas member, explains what he and his “co-conspirators” (that is, band members) are up to.
Available Light Theatre of Columbus, Ohio, is a fellowship of artists dedicated to building a more conscious and compassionate world by creating joyful and profound theatre. Documentary photographers Morrigan McCarthy and Alan Winslow are cycling around the United States, aiming to raise awareness about what everyday Americans are doing to help the environment. Entitled “Project Tandem”, their journey will culminate in late 2009 with a multimedia piece for the web, as well as a traveling exhibition of photographs and audio interviews.
MOTH: Movement Of The Heart is an aerial dance ensemble that fuses circus arts, dance trapeze, dance, and theater. The Vermont-based company is currently working on a full-length aerial dance show inspired by four American women who swam the English Channel in 1926.
Alimentum - The Literature of Food is the only literary review featuring new and original fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction all around the theme of food. The Chicago Tribune called Alimentum’s offerings “wonderfully thought-provoking snacking, best taken a nibble at a time to prolong the pleasure.”
Carrie Ahern Dance uses deceptively simple movement to distill questions about the complex nature of being human. Inspired largely by philosophical works, the company’s next project is a dance interpretation of “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”, to premiere in Fall 2009.
Kiros Pictures is a small film production company founded by two screenwriter/producers that, to date, has produced five short films and is transitioning this year into feature film development and production. Kiros comes from the Greek word meaning “a moment of divine time,” referring to the opportune moment in which something should be brought into existence. The company’s goal is to bring unique and interesting film to the world at just the right time.
