Sweet Home New Orleans is an organization that connects the culture bearers of New Orleans with 14 local and national non-profits. They help New Orleans musicians, Mardi Gras Indians, and Social Aid & Pleasure Club members stabilize their lives through housing and financial assistance, performance subsidies, and social services. One of their goals is to help New Orleans’ musical and cultural tradition-bearers realize their dream of returning to their families, their neighborhoods, and their roots in order to revive, uphold, and perpetuate New Orleans’ unique culture.
We asked Sweet Home New Orleans, led by Kate Benson, a few questions about their company and its work….
What/who are your biggest influences?
“The musicians and culture bearers who we work with everyday are our greatest influences. They make up the storied culture that is New Orleans. Without these wonderful individuals, New Orleans would not be the diverse and cultural city that it is today.”
What have been your greatest successes to date?
“Being able to support more than 1,600 New Orleans musicians, Mardi Gras Indians, and Social Aid & Pleasure Club Members since September of 2005,” is Sweet Home’s most noteworthy success, Kat Dobson, their Communications Director, replies. “It is a great success to watch the recovery of our clients and our city and know that we had a small hand in that.”
Finish this sentence: A world without art is….
“…. a world without life.”
