Mellon Foundation Awards for Open Arts Network Partners

Continuing a week of large funding announcements, Fractured Atlas would like to congratulate the four theatrical organizations that were awarded significant Mellon Foundation grants.  Two of the four companies, New Dramatists and The Playwrights’ Center, are Open Arts Network partners.  Here is some more information about the grants….

“The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has named the Sundance Institute Theatre Program, Lark Play Development Center, New Dramatists, and The Playwrights’ Center as organizations that will receive grants ranging from $500,000 to $1,000,000 over the course of the next three to five years in support of new work. The Mellon Foundation issued the following statement regarding the 2008 grant recipients: ‘These centers have a distinguished history of providing support for artists and of collaborating successfully with regional theaters across the U.S. in producing new works that have been developed at their labs. While different in terms of programming, all share a goal of bringing new voices to the American theatre repertoire.’”

New Open Arts Network Partner: Phoenix Conservatory of Music

We’re pleased to welcome our 56th partner in the Open Arts Network, the Phoenix Conservatory of Music!

The Phoenix Conservatory of Music’s (PCM) mission is “to unleash the power of music in children and families by providing a platform for creativity and expression, and preserving music as an essential building block to a person’s development.”

PCM serves close to 3,000 community members annually through early childhood, family, and adult programming; professional development for educators; after-school programs; and in-school residencies, among other programs. They believe that “music increases the individual capacity to learn and be a life long learner; music and movement, along with arts and academic integration, is a tool to teach and learn through; with quality standards-based programming, individual, family and community potential can be built; and that music is an inherent part of being human, and that the appreciation of, enjoyment in, and creation of music should be a part of daily life.”

We agree strongly with PCM’s beliefs and are proud to have them as a partner. As they are our first Open Arts Network partner in the state of Arizona, we are more than pleased to welcome them to Fractured Atlas!

Welcome Network of Ensemble Theaters!

We’d like to welcome yet another Open Arts Network partner into the fold (our 55th!)….

The Network of Ensemble Theaters (www.ensembletheaters.net) is “a consortium of North America’s permanent ensemble companies. NET is committed to preserving and passing on the legacy of the ensemble theater movement. The companies making up the NET include some of the most prestigious and vital ensembles in the United States as well as new ensembles that will inherit and reinvent this movement.”

Some of NET’s member companies include Dell’Arte Company in California (one of our other OAN partners); ARTFARM in Connecticut, GUTWorks in Vermont, and ArtSpot Productions in Louisiana (current Fractured Atlas members); and other cool companies like Roadside Theater Company in Kentucky and Rude Mechanicals in Texas.

We’d like to welcome NET and their members to Fractured Atlas!

New Open Arts Network Partners!!

Fractured Atlas is pleased to announce it’s newest Open Arts Network partners (if you don’t know what the Open Arts Network is, click on the link above)!

We are pleased to welcome:

- Dance/USA, the national, non-profit organization that provides services and leadership to enhance the country’s infrastructure for dance creation, education, and dissemination. Their branch offices include our good friends Dance/NYC, Dance/MetroDC, and Dance/Philadelphia.

- Creative Capital Foundation, a New York City-based nonprofit organization that “acts as a catalyst for the development of adventurous and imaginative ideas by supporting artists who pursue innovation in form and/or content in the performing and visual arts, film and video, and in emerging fields.” Creative Capital Foundation is the organization behind the MAP Fund grants that many of our members have received.

- The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), “the voice of the industrial design profession, advancing the quality and positive impact of design.” If you’re wondering what an industrial designer is, it’s basically an artist who designs the products we use everyday (everything from the toothpaste tube to the Blackberry) to optimize their function, value, and appearance.

- New Dramatists, “the nation’s oldest nonprofit center for the development of talented playwrights.” Some New Dramatists alumni include playwrights Horton Foote, August Wilson, and Susan-Lori Parks, among others.

- Pump Project Art Complex, a non-profit art venue in Austin, TX, that provides low-cost studio space, gallery facilities, exhibition opportunities, and other resources to emerging and established artists. We’re excited to keep expanding our base of members in the Austin area — one of the best arts hotspots in the nation!
