Performing Puppetry CLASS

This class is for beginners and intermediate practitioners to develop their puppetry skills outside of the stress of a rehearsal process. Additionally, the class encourages you to consider ways that bringing the inanimate to life might influence your other artistic endeavors. The class is unique in its use of dance/physical theater techniques to develop creative movement, emotion, and story in your puppet shows.
DROP-IN will start with warm-up exercises to put everyone on the same page. We’ll move on to study specific techniques for performing puppetry, including: specificity, weight, eyes, rhythm, breathing, and communication between puppeteers during 2-person manipulation. We’ll use doll-puppets, full-body costumes, and object puppets. We’ll go on to use improvisation within the framework of our daily theme to discover scenes.
The extended version will take the work started in DROP-IN and extend it into group projects. The ‘pieces’ created will focus on a particular kind of puppet and performance style. ie: hoods and ‘invisible’ puppeteers, or puppeteer relates to audience; Single doll-puppet, or groups of full-body figures.
LOGISTICS
You are not required to sign up for all 5 classes. However, to attend the extended version you must attend DROP-IN on that day. DROP-IN puppet performance and manipulation classes will run from 1:00 – 2:30, followed by the extended version from 2:45 – 3:45 Saturday Feb. 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and March 1st.
