NEW YORK CITY CELEBRATES WOMEN IN THE ARTS
MARCH 28, 2–9pm at the Puck Building, NYC

“Women in the Arts” is the focus of the first coordinated month-long series of events in New York City celebrating National Women’s History Month. Founding forces of this year’s series are A.I.R Gallery, the national center for women artists; and The National Women’s History Project, creators of National Women’s History Month.

The series will culminate in a day-into-evening honoring ceremony and exhibit held at the Puck Building at 295 Lafayette Street, on March 28th from 2-9 pm. For tickets and more information visit www.airgallery.org.

HIGH TEA HONORING CEREMONY
The National Women’s History Project will begin the day’s festivities with a High Tea and Ceremony beginning at 2:00, and honoring exceptional women who have make significant achievements to the art world. This historic event will be hosted by New York 1’s artbeat reporter Stephanie Simon. 2008 honorees are Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, Miriam Schapiro, Lorna Simpson, Nancy Spero, June Claire Wayne, Jaune Quick-To-See-Smith, Violet Oakley, Rose Cecil O’Neill, Lihua Lei, and Edna Hibel.

Collectors Showcase of today’s important cultural contributors such as Faith Ringgold, Lorna Simpson, Yoko Ono, Harmony Hammond to name a few. Over 150 works of art will be on view and for sale. All work is highly collectible, with prices ranging from $100–$1,000.

AWARDS
First Annual Art to Life awards sponsored by Art and Living Magazine. This year’s awardees will be: Dr. Elizabeth Sackler, Judith Brodsky, Ferris Olin, ACA galleries, P.P.O.W. and Flomenhoff Gallery for their commitment to promoting the work of Women in the Arts.

FEMINIST FASHION SHOW
BUST magazine a feminist magazine notorious for publishing cutting-edge fashion editorials, and the Department of Craft, a New York City arts and crafts collective, teamed up with A.I.R. Gallery to present a wearable exhibition which features thought provocative designs.

RECORD RELEASE
V. Da’Neesa Monk, who will provide the evening’s musical entertainment, will celebrate the release of her new record. Monk is the niece of jazz musician and composer Thelonious Monk. Veronica was born and raised in NY. She is a singer, multi-instrumentalist songwriter and actress. Veronica has recorded and toured as a singer and bass player. She has become a force in the Haitian Music scene and with her Jazz pedigree has been nurtured and encouraged by such Jazz greats as Cecil Bridge Water, Jay Starkes, Myrna Cake, Gerald Hayes, James “Ajax” Baynard, and Bass master Bakithi Kumal.

The final event in this month-long series will be a Brunch Lecture/Book Signing and Bus Trip on Saturday, March 29th. The day will kick off at the Pen and Brush Club, 16 East 10th Street, NYC with a Brunch Lecture by Molly Murphy MacGregor, executive director and co-founder of the NWHP, discussing the founding of National Women’s History Month. This presentation will be followed a multi-media presentation on women’s art and the suffrage movement by Robert P.J. Cooney, Jr., author of “Winning the Vote: The Triumph of the American Suffrage Movement.” A book signing will follow. At 1:30 a bus will leave from the Pen and Brush club for the Brooklyn Museum to see Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party.” The bus will return to the Pen and Brush Club at 5pm.
