After winning a Special Mention at the Berlinale, SITA SINGS THE BLUES is having its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

SITA SINGS THE BLUES synopsis:
Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by email. Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920's jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as "The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told."

NINA PALEY represents a real alternative to the movie business as usual. She single-handedly produced, directed, wrote, designed, and ANIMATED her debut feature SITA SINGS THE BLUES, an accessible, modern, funny, musical interpretation of the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. The film was made with virtually no money - except, she says, "eight million dollars of my own time" (which she hopes to recoup on the back-end), a 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship, and the financial assistance of hundreds of strangers who donated to the project online.

And it's a great film! Often described as "unlike anything you've ever seen," SITA SINGS THE BLUES won an award at the Berlinale in February and has already become an international festival favorite, invited all over the world.
