Shaking Up Shakespeare: The Actor and The Audience

Led by British director Pia Furtado, currently working at the Royal Shakespeare Company, this workshop will impart some valuable techniques in helping you unlock your Shakespearian delivery, through a series of exercises focusing on voice and verse. In the morning, you will look at the practicalities of tackling Verse, Prose, Monologues and Dialogue through the style of individualised text work that would be undertaken in a rehearsal process. In the afternoon you will concentrate on how the work translates in performance, particularly playing with the relationship constructed between the actor and the audience; experimenting with both Stanislavskian ‘fourth wall’ delivery and ‘direct address’ audience engagement. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a piece of memorized verse to this session. (8-10 lines of Iambic verse. Also bring a hard copy of the text or email it to us so we can make copies.)
Pia’s Bio
Pia Furtado is currently assisting Tim Carroll on The Merchant of Venice at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Pia is also the co-founder and artistic director of The Theory of Everything, a company committed to finding creating work that marries different artistic disciplines and draws upon collaborators with unique and varied training backgrounds (www.thetheoryofeverything.co.uk). She has assisted, trained and been resident at theatres including The King’s Head (2003), Royal Court, Young Writer’s Program (2004), National Theatre Studio Director’s Course (2005), Young Vic (2006) and Lincoln Center Directors Lab (2007). She has spent the last year immersed in the world of Opera, staff directing on Richard Jones’ Gianni Schicchi and Jonathan Millers’ Cosi Fan Tutte at the Royal Opera House, and Will Tuckett’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Royal Ballet, as well as several shows for Opera North, including Phyllida Lloyd’s award winning Peter Grimes. Pia has directed readings and workshops of new plays for companies including The Royal Court and Kali, and collectives like The Apathists, Drywrite and Burning Houses. Directing credits include GBS (Kings Head 2002), The UK premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s Parade (Edinburgh 2005, Winner of 3 Weeks Best Musical and Top 10 Shows in Edinburgh) and most recently Masquerade, a collaborative piece with writer Lizzy Dijeh in the Young Vic, Clare Studio. Pia is a founding member of The Internationalists.
The Internationalists
The Internationalists is a collective of theatre directors from around the world. By developing a global network of artists and producing collaboratively-created work, we foster theatrical exchange and cultural diplomacy. Since June 2007, we have produced a reading in New York and London, conducted a theatrical experiment simultaneously in Brooklyn and Munich, hosted a New Year’s Eve, held a World Theatre Day event and presented a workshop of The Seven Deadly Sins at the Public Theater.
