present:
WHALES AND OTHER ANIMALS - Family Fun!
FREE event, but you MUST rsvp to the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra offices at (562) 436-3203, ext. 244 or email rsvp@lbso.org
In the same way that the architecture of the Aquarium of the Pacific evokes the undulating rhythm of ocean swells, George Crumb’s “Voice of the Whale” for Flute, Cello and Piano was inspired by the songs of the humpback whale. The LBSO Chamber Players will take us on an oceanic voyage with a vivid collection of images: the screech of the seagull, the splash of primeval ocean waves and the cantabile whisper of the mighty whale itself. Also on the program is Saint-Saëns' beloved “Carnival of the Animals” performed here in the original chamber version for two pianos, string quintet, flute, clarinet and percussion. This will be accompanied by Dennis Poulsen reading humorous poems of Ogden Nash.
Architectural Commentary by Heather Barker, Assistant Professor of Design at CSULB
Featuring: Gloria Cheng & Brian Pezzone, piano; Kazi Pitelka, viola; Cecilia Tsan, cello; Geoff Osika, bass; Diane Alancraig, flute; Gary Bovyer, clarinet; Roger Wilkie & Mei Chang, violin; Lynda Sue Marks, percussion
