  What is event liability insurance?

  Event liability insurance is generally required by venues -- theaters, galleries, etc -- when their space is being rented and used for an event. It mainly covers against damage to the space itself and injury to anyone in attendance. It can also cover performers if necessary (the same coverage provided under Volunteer Accident insurance, as required by Actors Equity Association for Equity Showcases).

  The limits are $3,000,000 general aggregate; $1,000,000 each occurrence; $1,000,000 personal and advertising injury; $100,000 fire damage legal liability; $5,000 medical expense coverage per occurrence (if requested)

• How much does it cost?
  How much does it cost?

  Each policy must be individually underwritten by the insurance company, so we can't guarantee a particular rate in advance. Most events with under 800 spectators attending the event (over the entire length of the event) will warrant the minimum policy premium of $300 (not including the binder fee). Premiums are based on attendance figures and might increase if coverage for performers ("Volunteer Accident Insurance") is added.

  Through this program, we've insured a variety of different types of events (all of them must be artistic in nature), including: plays/musicals (including Equity Showcases), dance performances, opera performances, music/concert performances, gallery showings/installations, film screenings, literary readings/discussions, outdoor visual art presentations, galas/benefits for arts organizations, and some artistic classes/workshops. Rehearsals for these events can also be insured.

  In general, the insurance company we work with will not insure concerts that include certain musical performances: rap/hip-hop, punk, and heavy metal included (most insurance companies won't insure those). Events held in someone's private home are also generally not insurable, as it should be covered under a homeowner's policy.

• What if my event runs for a long period of time and/or in different venues?
  What if my event runs for a long period of time and/or in different venues?

  As long as it's the same event, it will be covered under the same policy. The event can run for one day, one month, or up to 11 months. If the event runs longer than 11 months, we suggest you apply to our Annual Liability Insurance program. And, if your event is a tour (or if you're rehearsing in one venue and performing in another), the policy can cover multiple venues.

  Does this policy include performer coverage/volunteer accident insurance?

  Coverage for performers can be included in these policies. Similar to Volunteer Accident Insurance, the insurance provider we work with is able to include performer coverage for all event and annual liability policies if it is requested on the application. This will cover both volunteer and paid performers up to $5,000 per occurrence. Please note the specific question that asks "Performer/Volunteer Accident Coverage?" Click "Yes" if you require this insurance. This provides the same coverage as Volunteer Accident Insurance and has been approved by Equity countless times.

• Do event liability policies automatically provide workers' comp insurance?
  Do event liability policies automatically provide workers' comp insurance?

  Unfortunately, they do not. You can apply for worker's comp separately, under our Liability Insurance menu, and we will provide you with a quote. Alternatively, you can elect to include performer coverage in your policy (you are asked this question on the application). This will cover up to $5,000 in medical expenses (per occurrence) for any injury to performers while they are in performance. This additional coverage will not cover injury to non-performing independent contractors or employees that are working on your event unless they are volunteers.

• We might be serving liquor at our events. Do we need to obtain liquor liability coverage?
  We might be serving liquor at our events. Do we need to obtain liquor liability coverage?

  Liquor liability coverage is only needed if you are in the business of selling, distributing, or manufacturing liquor (i.e., if you already have a liquor license). Therefore, if you have a liquor license already, you will need this coverage. Also, if you plan to sell liquor at your event, you will need this coverage (requesting donations for liquor and/or including the liquor as part of a ticket price do not constitute selling liquor). If you are simply serving liquor during the event, it will be covered under the policy. Please tell a Fractured Atlas staff member if you need this coverage included.
