Eyerly's song cycle is a celebration of animals, in all their glory and quirkiness. The songs are to be composed specifically for star mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, who will perform them around the world with the string ensemble Opus Five. The goal of the cycle is to delight - and also to raise awareness of animals' importance, especially those endangered. The songs' texts will draw on poems by a broad assortment of writers, from tender verse like Browning's "To Flush, My Dog" to amusing poems like Ciardi's "The Truth About Sharks." Approximately 20 minutes in length, this "zoo" of songs may be appreciated from many angles: musical, literary and environmental.
