Young New York: Being Seen Heard and Known

Legally classified as adults in New York State, 16 and 17 year olds are thrown into the adult criminal justice system if arrested. Young New York (YNY) is an art focused social justice project that raises awareness about this issue and the need for positive and constructive alternatives to this school to prison pipeline.

YNY will give 15 of these young New Yorkers the opportunity to engage in a series of creative workshops that will give voice to their experiences and hopes for the treatment of youth in the criminal justice system. The group will work closely with a team of successful artists, designers and teachers in responsibly developing their own message, and the medium to express it in a creative and powerful way.

The message and medium created in these workshops will culminate in the design of a compelling temporary public artwork. Once realized this public artwork will bring the voice of the young New Yorkers to a largely unaware audience, promoting a broader conversation about the treatment of 16 and 17 year olds in the criminal justice system.
