seeking Stage Manager for women's stories performance event
Press contact: Alexandra Jacoby - alexandra@vaginafestival.com
For release on: Aug 13, 2008
Vagina Festival is an outgrowth of Alexandra Jacoby’s photography project, vagina vérité®. Since Sept. 2000, she has been working on a book of close-up, documentary-style photographs - vulva portraits - so women can see ourselves for ourselves. Jacoby’s made 74 v-portraits so far, each strikingly unique (as we all are!) and the conversations spiraled out from there –
about sexuality, body image, menstruation, motherhood, contraception, women’s rights, violence against women –
finding again and again, that there is much that we share that we rarely ever talk about.
This grew into a website of questionnaires and articles, seeking to hold and share the many stories that came out of vagina vérité® - http://www.vaginaverite.com
By last year, this project needed more space, and more ways into these conversations than a website could provide. Vagina Festival is that space for conversations we don’t typically get to have – in ways we don’t typically have them.
Vagina Festival takes place Oct. 24-26 at Sage Theater in Times Square, Manhattan.
At Vagina Festival, we exchange ideas, challenge cultural norms and celebrate women.
We will be presenting performance art in a variety of media – poetry, plays, monologues, spoken word, music, dance, etc. – that tells women’s stories.
Vagina Festival is presented entirely by volunteers. It’s a collaboration—among artists, performers, speakers, sponsors, our crew, and attendees. A key agent in creating a memorable, engaging experience is the Stage Manager.
We are seeking a Stage Manager who has the passion, stage know-how and commitment to creating a conversation space required for our labor of love: Vagina Festival.
Our Program Coordinator, Kathleen Adams, is in the process of booking performers and blocking out the performance schedule. Next, she will hand over the reigns to the Stage Manager.
Our Stage Manager is responsible for the smooth and efficient running of technical rehearsals (two) and performances (one weekend).
