vanishingamerica
The Vanishing America Project is a mulit-year journey I've undertaken to use my skill as a photographer and a writer to promote conservation and raise awareness about what we are losing our culture, our wildlife, and our landscape in hopes that some of it will still be around for future generations to enjoy.
Since 2007, I have been traveling the United States in an eco-friendly motorhome that relies on used vegetable oil to run the engine and solar power to run the appliances, and I live green without sacrificing the "luxuries" of comfortable living.
I have been photographing vanishing landscapes, wildlife, small towns and cultures, while inspiring the public through gallery exhibits, written articles, a regularly updated website, regular video clips, presentations to schools, and the development of a TV show.
I stand as a role model to kids and adults alike that conservation doesn't have to mean extremism. Conservation is easy and conservation is cool.
My goal as an artist is to effect change with beautiful images that would stir your soul, tug on your heartstrings, and compel you to protect those things in your world that you cherish most. My work is intended to inspire you to take special care of those places and things that stir your soul. Because, if you don't, they'll be gone before you know it.
And, by integrating my project with conservation efforts around the country, by donating a portion of my image sales to these efforts, and by providing direct connections for fans of my project to contribute to these efforts, I will have created a complete cycle of inspiration and giving that will ensure that future generations get to enjoy our world as much as we have.

The first ever e-book from The Vanishing America Project is here! And, guess what?
It's FREE!
Yes, it's free. :)
This is a first for The Vanishing America Project. Though the goal has always been to publish in print the images and stories from this ongoing journey (and I do intend to do just that -- eventually), I figured everyone has waited long enough. It's time to make a concerted effort toward that goal. In that light, I have published my first e-book of images from the project. This is a first draft e-book, and only has a small sampling of the thousands of images and stories collected during my four years on the road. But the best part is that I'm making it available for free. Yes, that's right... FREE. If it turns out to be a popular e-book, I will work toward producing more -- toward that ultimate goal of hardcover publication. I hope you enjoy it. :)

Is this the end...? Not by a long shot!
Like many other businesses around the country, The Vanishing America Project has suffered from the poor economy. I've had to put it on hold indefinitely. That's not to say it's over. It's just on hiatus. ;)
I donated BABS to the Louisiana Environmental Action Network, but I still have the Defender. It's currently in the shop getting an engine transplant. When it's done, I plan to take little road trips to continue the project (on a smaller scale).
In the meantime, I've been building up my presence in the southeast by pursuing my art (through the Sentire Collection and the Parolè Collection) and by building up my photography business (shooting homes, portraits, events, concerts and much more).
You can see and purchase my work (both old and new) at www.holtwebb.smugmug.com

Spirit of the Salton Sea
Check out my latest article in RV Life Magazine: Spirit of the Salton SeaHere's a taste...The year is 2007. The air is heavy and hot. A slight breeze blows in off the water, but it, too, is warm and only adds to the weight of an already record-breaking summer’s end. A strange sense of desperation envelops me as I shuffle up to an abandoned building that is shimmering in the afternoon sun. Like a bizarre scene from some yet-to-be-made post-apocalyptic western, the North Shore Beach & Yacht Club bakes in the blistering heat of another dry summer in the California desert...Posted on Jun 2, 2011 -

Beautiful Jewelry made with Gulf Coast Oil!
STAINED
The abstract paintings of "STAINED" are created from tarballs collected from the beaches of Grand Isle, LA this past summer. The actual presence of oil in jewelry is meant to serve as an important reminder that the oil does not dissipate just because headlines disappear.Posted on Feb 8, 2011
The tar in the “STAINED” collection is sealed under clear crystal quartz, a powerful stone revered throughout history and across cultures for its attributes of healing, harmony, balance, purification, and protection. Quartz is used in this collection with the hope that these attributes will enable and inspire us to focus more clearly on the objective of caring for our environment to create a healthier ecology for future generations. The tar and stones are encased in responsibly refined and recycled silver and/or gold. Recycled chains and repurposed leathers complete the design.
The “STAINED” collection’s creation is inspired by photographer Holt Webb of Vanishing America, who suggested using tar in a jewelry design to create awareness of the ongoing Gulf destruction. Go to www.vanishingamerica.net to see Holt's documentation of the spill, the coast, and the people affected by the disaster. 20% of "STAINED" sales will be donated to further the artistic advocacy efforts of Vanishing America, and to aid some of the Gulf's residents that Holt has befriended. -

Responsibility of Ownership
I've posted this more than once, but as the number of people following The Vanishing America Project continues to increase, I feel obligated to continue re-posting it...
RESPONSIBILITY OF OWNERSHIP
As I sit pondering the current state of our economy and the upcoming elections, I find myself uncertain about the future of this great nation.
I don’t know if our economy will recover and I don’t know if I can trust our elected officials to “do the right thing” . One thing I do know, however, is that we are the stewards of this planet, like it or not. And, as stewards, it is our responsibility to take care of the world in which we live.People have often asked me if I’m an environmentalist. I’m not sure how to answer that. I love Nature. I love to see the massive forests, the wide-open plains, the tree-lined and snow-capped mountains, the swamps and wetlands, the sweeping deserts, and the diversity of the seashore. I love seeing such a vast array of wildlife in their natural habitats, from the tiniest shrew burrowing into the warm earth, and the herds of elk grazing the highlands, to the largest grizzly catching its lunch in a run of spawning salmon. And, I adore the idea of this land as it was two hundred years ago, teeming with uncountable forms of life.
But, that bountiful landscape is only a memory. When humans began to significantly populate this country, Nature was forced to take a back seat while we shaped the land into something more suitable to the way we wished to live. And, it will always be that way. As a very dear friend of mine noted, "Human beings have to come first. Otherwise, we'll become extinct." That may be an oversimplification, but I believe the intent is correct. We put ourselves at the top of the food chain in order to survive. But being at the top of the food chain comes with responsibility.
For, as long as we’re kings of this mountain, as long as we're in charge, we’re changing the face of our nation to meet our needs -- for good or bad, right or wrong. We continue to grow, and we have to continue to unabashedly accommodate that growth.
In my travels to big cities and small towns, I've talked with people from all walks of life, and have gotten opinions as varied as the species on this earth. But, regardless of who a person was, or where they lived, one common thread ran through the pattern: Management. More specifically, management of the natural environment. In essence, we can continue to grow as a nation, without destroying the planet or restricting our personal freedoms, by managing this land we call our own.
It's very difficult to do, but there has to be balance in order for both man and nature to thrive. And, since we’re the ones taking over, we must be the ones to take that responsibility. We must be the ones to manage the forests so they don’t go up in uncontrollable wildfires. We must be the ones to manage the herds and their range so they don’t overpopulate and destroy their lands and themselves. We must be the caretakers. Not zookeepers, but caretakers.
Long ago, we decided we wanted this country as our own. Now we must take Responsibility of Ownership.
