Creative Development Grants are made to Fractured Atlas members who need funding for specific expenses relating to artistic exploration or training but not connected to any particular project.

Fractured Atlas believes in the importance of continued training, development, and exploration throughout an artist's career, and these grants are designed to support that by targeting the artistic process, not product.

Examples of the types of expenses that might be funded include: workshops, classes, cultural exchange efforts, or laboratory explorations. Priority will be given to small arts organizations who demonstrate a commitment to fostering an environment of artistic risk-taking and ongoing exploration.

Grants in this category range in size between $250 and $1000.

Organizational Development Grants are made to members who need funding for specific expenses relating to increasing the organizational strength and stability of emerging arts organizations.

A major reason that so many young arts organizations fizzle out is that budget limitations prohibit them from prioritizing their own organizational stability. Grants in this category address that by targeting expenses that are not related to any particular project but will enhance the stability and lifespan of a young arts organization.

Examples of funded expenses might include: incorporation fees, accounting expenses, and the like. Priority will be given to emerging arts organizations who demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to their own organizational independence and continuity.

Grants in this category range in size between $250 and $1000.

What gets funded
Equipment purchases, consultant fees, filing fees, and other direct organizational development costs.

What doesn't get funded
Recurring costs, production expenses, one-time expenses that don't demonstrate a compelling long-term impact.

Can Creative or Organizational Development Grants fund productions or the creation of new work?
No. These programs fund projects that will make a significant impact on the sustainability of an arts group or individual artist's work. Awards from the program are not intended to defray short-term production costs.

Can a grant award from Fractured Atlas be used to reimburse past expenses?
No, only upcoming expenses are eligible for funding by the program.

Are grants available to non-members of Fractured Atlas?
No. Currently all grant programs are only available to applicants who are active full members of Fractured Atlas who have not submitted a previous proposal to the program for at least 2 funding cycles (6 months.)

What are the chances of getting funded through the program?
Though the chances vary based on the number and strength of the grant proposals received in a given cycle, Fractured Atlas receives an average of 15-30 proposals and is able to fund an average of 2-4 per cycle. These programs are competitive.

What if I have questions about whether my project is eligible for a particular category?
If you have questions, the best idea is to call Fractured Atlas and speak to a staff member. Though staff members are not responsible for making funding decisions, they can offer guidance on the format and content of proposal to the program.

Should I send additional support materials, like work samples, along with my proposal?
No. We can't accept any physical support materials. The application does provide the option of uploading a single digital file as a supplement.

Does the Fractured Atlas staff ever meet one-on-one with grant applicants?
Due to limited organizational resources and the modest size of the awards, an interview is not part of the application process.

How are funding decisions for the program made?
All grant applications are considered by a review panel consisting of Fractured Atlas Board members as well as peers from the arts community. The panel makes recommendations to the full Board, and those recommendations are discussed and finalized at quarterly Board meetings.

Can I contact Fractured Atlas to get feedback on their decision?
Yes! We welcome requests for feedback on funding decisions. Upon receiving communication from Fractured Atlas via mail, applicants should contact Adam Natale, Director of Member Services, who fields such requests and passes them on to the Grants Committee. He can be reached at support@fracturedatlas.org.
