The Rich Coast Project

protecting communities protecting the environment

The Rich Coast Project is a participatory storytelling and research project in southern Caribbean Costa Rica.

The project confronts the contentious land rights struggle currently occurring along Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast, connecting local experience to broad questions of international law and policy. Through the combination of new media storytelling and legal research, we will tell the communities’ side of the story and explore alternative approaches to the competing aims of sustainable development and environmental conservation.

The Rich Coast Project is a participatory storytelling and research project focused on documenting and supporting cultural heritage and human rights in the southern Caribbean region of Costa Rica. Over the next few months we are collecting interviews and multimedia materials exploring themes of identity, community and home, and involving as many community members as possible in the project’s production. To better understand how young people internalize these concepts, and to provide a platform for creative expression, we are organizing a Youth Photography Workshop. The project will consist of two workshop meetings with photographer facilitators, both being documented by the RCP crew. The first workshop will focus on basic photographic technique instruction, and the second will allow the participants to work with their results to develop a narrative around the theme “Esa es mi chante” / “This is my home.” The resulting work will be displayed at the Casa de la Cultura in Puerto Viejo. Your $60 donation will sponsor two participants, and in exchange we will feature your logo on our event flyer and recognize you on our website.
